Through friends, we were kept up to speed about the drama last spring at the Dalton School in NYC over its controversial production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.
According to NY Times, ” Leaders of the Dalton School, one of Manhattan’s top private schools, this month canceled a student production of the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” over concerns about the show’s use of Asian stereotypes and a subplot involving a white slavery ring in China, planning to replace it with a revue of the show’s songs instead. But after an outcry from students and feedback from creators of the musical, Dalton announced on Monday that it would put on a revised production that will drop references to Asia, change the names of two Chinese characters, and describe incidents of human trafficking as simple kidnappings.”
I don’t imagine there will be a similar uproar about the Theatro Technis production opening in October, but you never know!
