Man Ray Portraits Feb 7-May 27 2013 at National Portrait Gallery

Man Ray Publication

I am always surprised to be reminded that Man Ray, who i usually think of as a French modernist painter,  was actually  a boy named Emmanuel Radnitzky from Williamsburg, Brooklyn known mainly for his fashion photography.

The National Portrait Gallery  will be hosting the first major museum retrospective of the influential artist’s photographic portraits.

From The NPG“Featuring over 150 vintage prints from his career in America and Paris taken between 1916 and 1968, the exhibition highlights Man Ray’s central position amongst the leading artists of the Dada and Surrealist movements.

The exhibition includes Man Ray’s revolutionary photographic techniques such as solarisation and early experiments with colour. His subjects include friends, lovers and contemporaries, ranging from Kiki de Montparnasse and Lee Miller to Pablo Picasso and Catherine Deneuve.”
