From St. Martin in the Fields “In 2002, Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and beheaded by the militant group Al-Qaeda. Ten years on, the atmosphere surrounding East/West, Arab/Christian, and Middle Eastern relations remain tense and at worst explosive. We ask ourselves why we cannot reach a peaceful state where both sides of the ‘human border’ may live in a harmonious way.
‘Ascension’ is taking place in conjunction with the ‘Daniel Pearl – Ten Years On’ Project, which endeavors to refocus on the universal human tragedy that Daniel Pearl’s death represents and how it continues to affect us today. It illustrates how Daniel Pearl and his legacy have become a symbol in our modern age; and emphasizes the tragic potential for misunderstanding in our fragile world.
This candlelit charity concert includes the world premiere performance of ‘Elegy For Daniel Pearl’ by David Heath, commissioned by Daniel Pearl’s father, to be performed by saxophonist Andrew McNeill and organist Daniel Moult. The work was first featured in a documentary, ‘The Journalist And The Jihadi’ broadcast on HBO in 2006″
