The National Army Museum has a series of celebrity speakers who explore the social, economic and historical aspects and influences of the British Army. There is an interesting one coming up about Gurkhas.
The community where I lived in Hong Kong was guarded by extremely kind men who were both warm and gentle with all of our children. Yet they were Gurkhas and I was told that intruders would not stand a chance against their devastating warrior capabilities. Given this juxtaposition of seemingly conflicting traits, Chris Bellamy’s talk about Gurkha origins in the hills of Nepal and their rise as the elite troops of the British Empire who have fought for nearly two centuries should be enlightening.
